Learn about Brown Bears and their Behaviour

Piše: Kočevsko

Forests of Kočevsko are reigned by the charismatic brown bear (Ursus arctos), that is the largest representative of carnivorans.

Home range size

Brown bears are the only bear species found in continental Europe. Historically they lived throughout most of Europe, but today they are confined to four main areas (Scandinavia, NE-Europe, Carpathians, Dinarides) and several smaller areas e.g. Pyrenees, Apennines).

The areas where bears range are large in size and overlap with those of humans. They are not territorial animals so areas where they range also overlap with other bears. Bears communicate with eachother through marking behavious, ie. rubbing on trees where they leave their hairs and personal smell. They also often leave scratch marks on tree trunks.
